2011 (English) In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A, Physical Geography, ISSN 0435-3676, E-ISSN 1468-0459, Vol. 93A Article in journal (Refereed) Published Abstract [en] We combined ground-based pulsed radar data collected in 20082009 with airborne radio-echo sounding data acquired in 1983 and 1986 over Vestfonna ice cap, Svalbard.

Field campaigns were conducted during the period 2007–2010 in spring (April/May) and summer (August). Austfonna means ‘eastern ice cap’. ‘Brå’ means ‘sudden’, svell is ‘advance’. The Bråsvellbreen is named because of a sudden advance in 1937-38, a so-called surge. The surface area of Austfonna is 8100 km 2, without neighbouring Vegafonna (350 km 2). Vestfonna and Austfonna are two massive ice caps which cover most of the island.

VSF was the target of a re-cent International Polar Year (IPY) project (Pohjola et al., Vestfonna is an ice cap located on the western part of the Svalbard archipelago and covers an area of about 2,500 square kilometres. Jostedalsbreen Situated in Vestland county in Fjord Norway, Jostedalsbreen is the largest glacier in continental Europe , covering 487 square kilometres with ice up to 600 metres thick. During IPY4-Kinnvika an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) was installed on the western margin of the Vestfonna Ice Cap, Svalbard by a group from the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, Sweden. We analysed a 34-year data record of multi-spectral satellite imagery in order to study changes in glacier frontal positions of the ice cap Vestfonna. A consistent pattern of almost steady retreat of the southern and north-eastern outlet glaciers of the ice cap is observed while Franklinbreen, the only major outlet glacier draining towards the north-west shows re-advance. For Vestfonna, this amount is assumed to reach 90% of the accumulation sum of the preceding winter season 13, i.e.

While the initial AAR of Vestfonna, 0.59 ± 0.06 (mean ± one standard deviation of all 40 ensemble members) during the first decade of modelling, indicates a quasi steady-state glacier, this situation rapidly changes over the modelling period. Halving of the initial AAR already occurs between the 2020s (RCP 8.5) and the 2080s (RCP 2.6) (Table 1).

The ice cap Vestfonna in the northern Svalbard archipelago is one of the largest ice bodies of the European Arctic (∼2400 km2), but little is known about its mass balance. We model the climatic mass balance of the ice cap for the period September 2000 to August 2009 on a daily basis.

Vestfonna

The role of snowdrift on Vestfonna Ice Cap (Svalbard) In high Arctic regions, redistribution of snow mass by wind drift impacts the mass balance of glaciers. Particularly along the margin of larger ice caps, persistent katabatic winds become often strong enough to effectively remove snow from the surface and re-accumulate the eroded snow mass within the surrounding areas.

Vestfonna

The polythermal ice cap Vestfonna covers an area of 2340 km2 (Reference Braun Braun and others, 2011) of the island Nordaust-landet (northernmost Svalbard archipelago) at around 80° N extending between sea level and ∼630 m a.s.l. Along with the much larger neighbouring Austfonna and Icelandic VatnaJökull, it is among the largest ice masses of the European Arctic.
